The first massively multiplayer game worthy of the name “massively” was Ultima Online. Debuting 15 years ago, the game is still going strong. Why?
The reasons will depend on who you ask. Every player or developer will tell you something different. That’s because this game has become something for everyone who plays.
For some, it’s the ultimate sandbox that’s grown from simple to basic to greatness because it’s mostly remained open-ended and unlimited.
For others, it’s the nostalgia of playing the game they’ve been playing since they were teenagers or even younger.
Still others might like the simplistic graphics that don’t interfere with actual game play in the way over-complex graphics in newer games often compete with storyline or mechanics.
Finally, for everyone who plays the game, it’s about friends, fun, and good times. Will it go away? Not anytime soon.
