SEGA of America and SEGA Europe have acquired San Francisco-based design and development firm Three Rings Design. The firm is responsible for popular games such as Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights.
This is the third major acquisition from SEGA recently, as the company has been moving on an aggressive front towards MMO and online gaming, buying up companies like Sports Interactive and The Creative Assembly (Total War).
SEGA lagged behind on the Internet revolution and online gaming and is making these acquisitions in hopes of catching up. Given the quality of their grabs so far, it’s likely they may pull it off. Spiral Knights will continue on its present course of worldwide release and work on the MMO based on the Sci-Fi series Doctor Who will continue for an as yet unannounced debut.
