There are fans and then there are uber-fans. One fan in China has gone beyond even uber and paid $16,000USD for a one of a kind virtual sword in Age of Wulin: Legend of the Nine Scrolls.
This in a game that isn’t even live yet. In fact, the auction winner can’t even download his winnings yet.
Snail Games held the auction on virtual in-game items as a publicity stunt to promote the game’s upcoming release in China. The $16k sword was only the beginning. Other items went for thousands of dollars as well. A sheath (not the actual weapon, just the sheath) went for !1,600 while another went for $2,500. Pre-paid time cards and other game materials went for $15 and $30 as well.
The auction winner’s names were not announced, but the sword winner is clearly happy with his purchase (pictured).
