PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby gave an interview in gaming magazine PC Gamer and leaked the scale of the maps for the game. They will be 8km by 8km (virtual) grids to allow for massive player-versus-player (PvP) matches and to accommodate many game play styles so various character types and player styles can coalesce.
Describing the game play space as “enormous,” Higby mentions that some weapons can accurately fire for up to a kilometer. The three factions in the game, the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovereignty, will vie for strongholds on each continent with battles involving 200 or more players on a single map.
The ambitious follow up to PlanetSide will obviously be huge on an epic scale and will allow for many game tactics and strategies to be used. Higby says that smaller forces defending a stronghold can stave off much, much larger forces (using an example that pits 7:1) with the right tactics and team play.
Most battles will tend to congregate into 1km spaces in and around the maps’ focal points (city scapes, high ground, etc), so battles will likely pit smaller groups against one another simultaneously around the map.
