FFXIV Getting Class Reforms in v1.20

Final Fantasy XIV developers have posted a proposed list of class reforms for the upcoming v1.20 release patch.  The information gives players an inside look at what is happening with planned changes and why they’re taking place.

The team’s goals are to:

  1. Streamline the Armoury system.
  2. Make classes more unique.
  3. Introduce a character development system that are distinct to FFXIV.

The goal of the developers is to offer high levels of freedom to players so that they can more easily switch classes by merely swapping their equipped weapon.  Right now, player feedback is that the system is too complex in regards to gear restrictions and settings with a cumbersome user interface, so the team’s primary goal with these changes is to make it more streamlined and easier to use.

The team also notes that the current system makes the lines between classes blur since many abilities are cross-class and not uniquely identified with an individual class.

So they have laid out how they will be revamping the class-based systems to better meet player expectations.  Highlights of those changes include:

  • Comprehensive review and revision of actions learn-able by each class so that that can be made unique for the class.
  • Traits will be added to those things earned by gaining levels (guild tokens will be abolished).
  • 15 actions and 11 traits will be available for each class up to level 50.
  • Shield skills will be phased out and made part of the Gladiator class.
  • Reforms will be made to the conditions for setting actions and traits to simplify and clarify the process.
