Following Sony Online Entertainment’s announcement that it would be pulling the plug on Star Wars Galaxies, fans have begun to rally support to keep the game from shutting down at the end of the year. SOE’s decision was influenced by a number of factors, including the company’s contract expiration with Lucas Arts in September, a gradually declining subscriber base, and the the launch of the highly anticipated EA-Bioware MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Fans are reacting in a typical fashion, by gathering together in hopes that a show of solidarity will change the minds of company executives. As of June 29th, 2,465 subscribers had signed a petition requesting that SOE keep the game servers online. However, SOE has yet to respond to the petition requests and has shut down any attempts to communicate the news of the petition on the SWG forums.
While Sony has not officially responded on paper to the petition and its supporters, VentureBeat has reported that SOE cannot allow distribution and discussion of the petition on SWG forums. Sony’s reponse to allegations from fans that they were being “passive agressive” in its attempts to thwart momentum from supporters to keep the game live:
“Promoting an online petition causes disruption within the community and does not provide gameplay feedback that our development team can use.”
