F2P and PvP on Superhero MMOs

DC Universe Online

DC Universe has announced it’s going free-to-play (F2P) with the next update.  Both PC and PS3 players will have a choice of three levels of membership:

  • Free: Players will have access to Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts, will be able to purchase add ons and premium content, and will be able to make two characters.
  • Premium: Anyone who has or will spend $5 on the game will be elevated to Premium status and will have more character slots available, higher cash limits and a larger stash.
  • Legendary: Players purchasing a $14.99 per month subscription will have unlimited access to the game with all premium for free.

IGN made the announcement and says Sony Online will have the F2P version online for download in October.

In the meantime, superhero rival MMO Champions Online has introduced a new player-vs-player (PvP) mode called King of the Hill.  The game centers in a zone called Vibora Bay and players vie for control of the mausoleum fountain as they fight one another in a no-holds-barred King of the Hill tourney.

Winning teams are those who hold the fountain for 7 minutes, but underdog contestants get stronger and stronger (through a Determination buff) as the minutes tick away.
